How To Stop Dog Jumping
So you’ve got a cute and cuddly dog and you lavish him with lots of praise and treats and all those other things just to show him how much you love him. He jumps up on you and you praise him even more because you like the feeling of how excited he becomes when he sees you. But then, as weeks pass, it becomes a little annoying for you. You can’t count how many times your dog has soiled your clothes and torn your shirts and pants. In short, it’s become an immediate problem. If you want to stop your dog from jumping, then this article is most definitely for you.
Reasons Dogs Jump
Before you begin the task of curing your dog of this behavior, then you must have a basic understanding of the reasons. Yes, it’s definitely cute when they’re just puppies (or if their breed type is just naturally small), but when they’re older (and especially if they come from very large breed types), it can get annoying. Don’t lose hope yet, simply because, any bad habit, behavior, or quirks, can be cured. Below are some of the basic reasons why dogs jump.
• It’s their natural instinct to jump especially when they’re excited.
• It’s basically your fault why your dog keeps getting excited whenever you’re away. You lavish him with too much praises and treats whenever you come home to greet him. The dog thinks that he automatically gets a treat or praise whenever you arrive.
• Even if he isn’t really excited about your arrival, he’s already formed the habit at a young age. Again, it’s still basically your fault because you’ve encouraged and indirectly trained him to do that.
• He probably becomes too lonely whenever you go away for very long periods and jumping is his way of showing you how bored he was all this time. In short, he wants your attention.
• You haven’t taught him the basic commands such as SIT or OFF. Lack of basic training causes other behavioral problems to surface other than just jumping.
• You’re inconsistent with the rules and commands. This causes him to get confused on what you’ve been trying to say all along.
• He’s probably trying to assert his dominance over you. This is basically bad because he’s starting to lose some respect for you and this is how he tries to see if he can get away with it. Your previous reactions to his jumping may have caused him to think that he has power.
Solutions To Jumping Dogs
If you really want to stop your dog from jumping up on people and you, then you need to understand and empathize with your dog. Dogs have reasons why they jump, but they can’t explain them to you. When you’ve understood the basics and the causes, then you can proceed to finding a cure. Below are some solutions that are most likely to cure your dog from jumping.
• Be consistent with the rules and commands so as to avoid confusing your pet. Always use the same command (in a consistent tone of voice) with specific things you’d like him to do. Also, if you don’t want your dog to jump up on the bed, then you must not allow him or even put him there. This goes out to your family too, so don’t let anyone change the rules around.
• Stop the dog before he jumps. One way to do this is to put one of your knees up (near your chest) every time you feel that the dog is about to jump up on you.
• If he still manages to jump up at you even though you’ve got your knee up, voice out the word NO in a firm manner. You could also try snarling or growling to discourage the dog.
• Suppress your instinct to give the dog attention whenever you come home. Just walk by him and act like it’s no big deal that you’ve finally arrived or that he was left alone.
• Give him basic dog training (or if he’s already had it, retrain him).
So that covers the basics on how to stop dogs from jumping. As a concluding tip, never reward your dog with treats or praises after a jump. Even a pat on the head is still considered a reward so don’t do it. Only reward your dog if he calms down so you can be assured that he won’t be jumping anymore.
