How To Stop Your Dog Jumping Up On People

Dog JumpingThere can be many different reasons why a dog would jump on a person. However, these reasons can be broken down into three different categories. The three categories are as follows:

  • To get a person’s attention
  • To assert dominance
  • It is an accepted behavior

The first of these categories is the most common of the behaviors. This is because many times the dog will jump on a human because they are so excites to see them. They feel that by jumping up and down and bounding on the person who has just entered the home they are showing love and loyalty. They want whoever shows up to know that they are there and that they want to be noticed.

When a dog is jumping on a person to show dominance it is because they feel threatened by the human who has entered their domain. They want to let the person who is there know that this is their house and you are in my domain.

Dogs will learn and think that it is acceptable to jump on people if they are allowed to do so and the owner of the dog says nothing in regards to what the dog is doing. In essence it is the same as seeing something is wrong and walking away from it, because it does not truly affect you. In other saying it is OK, by not saying no.

Controlling the behaviour

In essence in order to be able to control the dog and to be able to break the pet of this behavior, you will need to be able to assert to the dog, that you are the boss and not vice versa. It is about training and being able to be in control of your dog. The dog in many cases is said to be a direct reflection of their owner. This is not necessarily true in the behavior of the dog however. A dog needs to be conditioned much like a child in that they need repetition as well as consistency in order to understand and obey the commands that they are given.

So in order to maintain a properly mannered dog, one needs to learn the proper corrective action to use in order to keep the dog from jumping on people. One of the best and most recommended methods is through the use of verbal commands. However, these need to be commands and should not include the name of the dog. This could lead to confusion for the dog as the dog, will associate its name with bad behavior. Therefore the dogs name should only be used in the event of praise whereas words such as off or no should only be used by themselves.

In essence, what is occurring is a programming of the dog. To get the dog to understand and know what is meant by simple one word commands and to then be rewarded for doing the proper behavior will lead to a well behaved pet as well as a well liked pet for you, your family and friends to enjoy.

The question is though, will these thoughts and ideas work in the event of inheriting an older dog or, if you have an older dog that will need retraining. The answer to this question is a simple yes. However, there is a little more that is actually involved with the training of an older or a more stubborn dog. The thing that is more involved is going to be the fact that there will need to be a lot more patience as well as discipline that will be needed in order for the program to be a success.

Most of the time, an older dog is going to be very set in their ways much like and older human is, but just like with people, dogs can learn new behaviors, and can be taught different and new things.

Another idea and method that can be used in order to keep a dog from jumping on people is by getting down to their level. This means that one should get nose to nose with a dog when looking to greet the pet. This way the animal will know you are friendly and would rather be greeted with a look in the eye as opposed to being pounced on.

So use these methods so as to allow for you to get closer to your pet as well as to improve the behaviors you are seeing.
