Border Collie Training

Border collies are one of the most favored dogs to have around the house. Because these dogs have also been used around farms in the rural areas for decades, they are also one of the most helpful dogs to have around and also one of the smartest and can do plenty of neat tasks for you, if you know how to train your dog right. Because of the perfect combination of beauty and brains, the border collie remains today one of the most popular dogs to have around, and one of the most distinctive features of the border collie is the so-called collie stare, with fixed eyes that are sharp and focused, with an erect and proud body, as if your border collie is the prince of all dogs.Border Collie

Border Collies are working dogs

Because of their work-loving nature, they are perfect farm hands, and coupled with their intelligence, they have been used traditionally as the perfect shepherd’s companion to watch over herds and to guide flocks to any given destination. However, this also means that your dog is a very sport one and can pose some problem areas that you will need to troubleshoot, if you are not able to give your dog sufficient time and venue to be active and to enjoy a good roll around the grass.

The Border Collie is a chaser

As previously mentioned, this breed of canine loves some activity that involves much motion, such as keeping a herd of farm animals in check. It is also one of the reasons why your border collie likes to chase anything and anyone in the block around. It could be the mailman or a biker, and it could also be some of the many small and fury animals that live around your house. You will, however, need to train your dog not to intimidate too many people around the block. In some areas, this may get your dog a good beating, so it is important that you train your dogs chasing habits down.

The Border Collie is a very loving creature

Because of this, one of the strong points about having a border collie around the house is the care and faithfulness that it will show its master. However, this also has some downsides, such as the ability to be easily homesick and the easy way by which it falls to separation anxieties. This is one of the reasons why it is best to get a border collie while it is still young – because when a border collie matures and ages, it will become very attached to its previous owner and may not bond so well with the new one.

Early training is best for Border Collies.

While this applies to a lot of dogs, it is especially important for border collies because they are hyperactive creatures and if you do not teach them early on, they may make a mess of any room where you leave them. This becomes very problematic also when you realize that the border collie is also one of the smartest dogs around and if they learn to live a certain way of life, they may not allow it to be taken away from them so easily. Thus it is very important to always train your dog early on.

Know how to provide venues for your dog to be smart and active. Because the border collie is a working dog, you should always provide it venues to exercise its natural tendency for work. Otherwise, your dog will do nothing but chase squirrels and young children all day. It is also important for border collies to be given activities which require some intellectual work, because they have the intelligence and will use it on other things if you do not help them use it up on their own. The difficulty here lies in the fact that the other things that they can do can sometimes be nuisances, such as following your car whenever you leave the house. There are few things as annoying as having to drive back home simply because your dog has followed you so far away that it cannot go back by itself.

Border Collies are sensitive dogs

The border collie is also one of the most sensitive dogs to have. Because of this, you should always pay close attention to the ways on how you train your dog. When you use too much negative reinforcements on your dog, the tendency is for your border collie to refuse acknowledging you and begin to whole-heartedly disliking you.

If you can provide the basic needs of the border collie when training it, you can be sure that you will end up with a faithful companion that doesn’t only heed your calls, but also the more complex of your doggy tasks.
